What is The Difference? Resin VS Concrete

Charlie Clark • December 16, 2025

Both resin bound and concrete driveways are popular choices for homeowners in Andover and the surrounding area when the time comes to upgrade. Life expectancy is an obvious factor in both situations; however, what other factors might influence the choice? Appeal to the Eyes

Hundreds of colours mimicking the look of natural stone are available in resin, which adds to its aesthetic value (as seen in the second image below). Any type of property can be complemented by a custom design, whether it's a modern or classic one.

You can observe that concrete produces a similarly neat and tidy appearance in the first image below. You can change the colours and "stamp" patterns, but there's not as much variety as with resin.

For the visual aspect, who took home the trophy? Without fail, resin. Any type of property can be suited by the limitless options.

Lifetime of Driveway

Heavy objects can be safely placed on top of concrete because it is an extremely strong material. On the other hand, when weather conditions change, it becomes the most "crackable" surface. When cracking occurs, the repairs are more noticeable as well.

After it's been installed correctly, resin is extremely durable. Because of its high "flex", it is less likely to crack and can withstand increased ground movement compared to other driveway materials. Use resin on any surface that will be subjected to vehicle traffic.

Ability to Drain

One of the best options for a driveway that allows water to drain away is a resin bound surface. The water simply drains through without any delay. No more flooding, reduced risks, and complete SUDS compliance are the results of this. Furthermore, due to the property's drainage capabilities, installing resin does not require planning permission.

Since concrete is completely impermeable, it is not ideal for managing water resources. Be careful to install drainage channels and falls properly to prevent water from sitting on the driveway. Additionally, this raises the likelihood of flooding due to water run-off.

Because of its intended use, drainage is where resin really shines.

Compare Resin and Concrete Prices

Here is where concrete really shines; compared to resin, its installation costs are typically 20–40% lower, give or take depending on the dimensions and other factors. True, resin is more costly to install due to the many "wins" it has within this guide. Nevertheless, with the additional expenses of concrete maintenance, it can usually balance out in the long run.

Expenses associated with upkeep

Resin requires very little upkeep—infrequent sweeping and, at most, a jet wash once a year—to keep looking great. As an added bonus, it doesn't need sealing and is weed-and fade-resistant. Driveway debris can be better managed thanks to resin's porous nature.

To a large extent, concrete requires little upkeep in its initial two to three years. It may begin to fade and even crack after that. It also starts to wear down in the winter and becomes very slippery. That being said, concrete needs sealing to remain functional and attractive. This process typically needs to be done every two years and can cost anywhere from £500 to £2,000.

How long is an install?

Setting up takes about the same amount of time. Full excavation projects follow a very similar pattern: excavate to the specified depth, remove all debris, construct the base and sub-base, and finally, lay the finished surface.

Most residential projects involving resin or concrete can be completed in three to seven days.

Furthermore, it takes several days for both materials to be ready for use in vehicles.

Which surface is superior in general?

In comparison to concrete, resin offers more advantages, as stated in the guide. Twenty to forty percent off, though, can make a huge difference in a tight budget. As a result, the main consideration is the price. As a result, the main consideration is the price.

Still, there are a select few who adore concrete's aesthetic and are willing to shell out the small but consistent maintenance costs. Thus, concrete is the better choice.
